Apostasy    (pronounced uh-pos-tuh-see) noun
and Apostate    (pronounced uh-pos-tayt or uh-pos-tit) noun

Definition

APOSTASY = the abandonment or renunciation of something that one has previously been loyal to, such as a religious faith, cause, political party, or a set of principles.

APOSTATE = someone who commits apostasy.

Main Example

  • In the weeks preceding the war in Iraq, Sen. McCain delivered one of the more notable French-bashing speeches, accusing France of apostasy because it had "turned its back on the political ideals of Western civilization."

    Workplace Examples

  • Everyone knows that I have always advocated more decision making at lower levels. So, my supporting a plan which will result in quite the opposite would be nothing short of apostasy. My entire credibility with the employees would just vanish. No sir, I can't do that.

  • With this new study offering even more convincing evidence that our snack foods contribute to teenage obesity, I have now decided to vigorously oppose the very business practices I have enthusiastically participated in for decades. And if my former colleagues want to denounce me as an apostate, that's fine with me. I'll proudly wear that label because at least I will be following my conscience and doing the right thing!

    Other Examples

  • Pakistani President Musharraf's post-Sept. 11 switch from pro-Taliban to a firm U.S. ally earning him the status of an apostate in the eyes of Osama bin Laden

  • Sen. Jeffords, whose 2001 resignation from the Republican party handed control of the Senate to the Democrats, still unforgiven by some for his "treachery" and "apostasy"

  • Richard D. Heffner, the long-time head of Hollywood's film rating board, becoming an apostate from that field, telling Newsweek that the present voluntary system of self-regulation no longer works in the for-profit world of mass entertainment, and that the media, because of their formidable influence on our children, need to be subject to outside regulation, as are our schools and teachers
